Data Backup & Restore

“According to the DTI, 70% Of Businesses That Suffer A Major Data Loss Are Out Of Business Within 18 Months.”

Supreme Systems like many businesses today is data driven. Government legislation and the requirements of some of the regulatory bodies we belong to means we are obliged to keep records on almost everything. We keep records on employees, customers and suppliers’ we will also document our processes and store information pertaining to our marketing campaigns. We understand that our data is the business’ lifeblood so we do absolutely everything to ensure that if we were to lose our data we have provisions in place to restore it back to its original state.

What would happen if YOU were to suddenly lose your data?

From the same study conducted by the DTI, only 55% of businesses had implemented any kind of data backup provision while 25% of this figure knew how to restore their information from a backup if data loss was experienced.

You can backup your data in several ways including:

1. Tapes: Many small businesses have plumbed for using tapes (where you save your data to physical tapes) to store their data and although using tapes is better than having no provision at all, in our opinion, using tapes is NOT the best option for saving your data. Tapes easily corrupted; expensive to implement; time consuming and also a little “old fashioned.”

2. Removable Backup Device: This is where you buy a removable device (like a stand-alone hard drive) that you simply plug in to your PC or Server and it backs up your data. This method is inexpensive, easy to configure and the backup function can be automated. The removable backup device is always our first tier backup option and we recommend this to all our customers over having a tape drive.

3. Offsite: The third option to consider for your data backup needs is having your data held at an offsite location. This is what we refer to as the second tier backup provision. Your data can be backed up daily, weekly or monthly at a data centre (where the data is held) ready to be restored if you ever need it.
You can use any of the options outlined above as a stand-alone provision but we always recommend that our clients have a two tier backup provision. This is because you can never predict anything. Accidents will happen, hardware can become faulty, thefts are a possibility and then there are circumstances that fall beyond your control such as floods. Having a two tier backup provision means that you are doubly protected – if one provision fails you have the other to fall back on!
